University Wren and the Temple of Boom

#1 Post by Wren » Sun Feb 02, 2020 4:22 am

It is not by shouts but by whispers that the heroes are summoned. A rumor overheard, a letter appearing at their bedside, an ominous vision echoing into their meditations like a distant scream. One way or another, they are warned: be ready, the world will need you soon. Make your way to the crossroads south of Rhojidan.

At a Crossroads on the Snowy Tundra
The dark stone road reaches an intersection here. It runs west along the
imperial trade route, and north through a snowy village. There is a guard house
to the northeast, and a long gravel road runs south. A somewhat large merchant
stall sits off the road to the southeast.

As the moon sets in the west, the rising sun emerges on the eastern horizon, casting its light across the realm of Asteria.

Wren clears her throat. 'Excuse me.'

Wren says, 'Some I've asked directly, others have been summoned through mystical intervention... all of you are here for the same reason.'

Wren says, 'To put it simply, we have about three days to prevent a calamity.'

Quellious raises an eyebrow and asks, "Eh?"

Ulias's face grows troubled

Oiche leans on their staff, and asks, 'What do you need?'

Tay crosses his swords

Wren says, 'To the south there is a Temple dedicated to the art of Evocation and the elements of frost, fire, and lightning. It draws students from all over the world, with a promise of elemental power and a connection to elementals themselves.'

Wren says, 'It is a trap.'

Eryn nods slightly.

Ulias says 'a trap?'

Wren says, 'The entire structure is a living thing, which does boost the power of its students, yes, but also drives them mad. And it feeds on their madness and their violence.'

Wren says, 'It harvest them.'

Quellious gives a disappointed, "Oh..."

Wren says, 'And earlier this year, several of their number learned how to tap into this power.'

Ulias's eyes grow wide, "by the three... what madness"

Beriedir appears deep in thought for a moment.

Wren says, 'They intend to use it to elevate their monstrosity, what they call the Prismatic Dragon, into godhood.'

Quellious says 'Rho's tail!'

Eryn raises a quizzical eyebrow at you.

Wren says, 'That they'll fail is almost certain. What would bring us ruin is the scale of their failure.'

Wren says, 'This temple has been harvesting power for a century now, and the scale of the resulting explosion could be...'

Wren says, '... well, let us simply say I suspect it might bother the Draconians who live nearby. And I'd simply rather not do that.'

Beriedir says 'dabbling in that which should not be is a dangerous profession.'

Eryn says 'Yes, let's not have that.'

Beriedir scratches at his burn mark.

Wren says, 'The only window we have to disrupt their ritual is near its completion. Which is approximately three days from now.'

Oiche says 'Are we not in Rhojidan territory? Isn't this a matter for their much-vaunted army?'

Ulias rubs his head, "This sounds like a great calamity indeed, should not the Rhojidani army be preparing some sort of attack?"

Quellious laughs heartily at Oiche.

Wren says, 'I apologize for the skull and daggers, for the intervention into your meditations, for all the secrecy. We simply don't know who to trust, except who our own clairvoyance suggests.'

Tay snorts loudly

Quellious says 'I believe I represent their army at the moment'

Quellious takes a moment to ponder the situation.

You shake your head.

Quellious says 'You know who isn't here though? That one family'

Wren says, 'No.'

Eryn says to Oiche, 'The temple is certainly not under Rhojidani control.'

Tay glances over at Quellious with a knowing smirk.

Wren says, 'If a military intervention was possible, it'd be underway.'

Wren says, 'We're going to have to sneak in to disrupt the ritual. If we assault it outright, they might just rush the ritual's completion, making the scale of the disaster even worse.'

Eryn says to Wreh, 'I'm sorry you didn't feel you could trust me implicitly, but I assure you I will be at your side.'

Wren responds, 'I apologize. All must be as fore-ordained.'

Eryn nods.

Tay says 'I love this, I me, will be a Tanker of Old.'

Quellious pats Tay on the back.

Quellious says 'I can take the hits'

Tay clangs his swords against his brest plate

Quellious grins mischievously.

Wren says, 'Some of you I've worked with before. Others I have not. What I can tell you is that our meditations are clear: we must set out together if we're to thread the narrow path through Time that allows us a chance at disrupting their ritual.'

Wren continues, 'But I dislike trusting prophecy overmuch,' before sharing a healthy supply of dozens of prismatic potions and scrolls of prismatic shield. The University, originators of scroll scribing and potion brewing, never let their allies go unprepared, after all.

Eryn shouts, "WOW!"

Eryn says 'That's quite a few'

Wren says, 'I've prepared some supplies.'

Oiche says 'And now, we have a ritual bath'

Quellious lovingly pets Tay on the head.

Wren says, 'Help yourself to a full stack.'

Wren says, 'Everyone take two scrolls of Prismatic Shield, as well.'

Wren says, 'Unless you know the spell, of course'

Wren says, 'Before every particularly dangerous fight, cast the spell and drink a potion.'

Wren says, 'I'll give you warning.'

Ulias says 'so... once again it is up to us.'

Ulias nods.

Wren says, to Ulias, 'Good thing we've got practice.'

Ulias smiles slightly and nods at Wren.

Tay says 'can I get my swords bless please.'

Wren says, 'of course,' before employing the exclusive art of group casting to endow the entire gathering with Wisdom and Blessed Weapons at once.

Tay nods toward Wren.

Ulias does some stretches, preparing for a long night.

Ulias smirks, "The rogues of the moorland are about to get a rude surprise."

Eryn chuckles merrily.

And with that, the band sets out. As they make haste through the Greywind Pass, they are indeed set upon by rouges. With twin casting, Wren slaughters them two at a time as they proceed.

Then the stormclouds gather more literally, a thunderstorm descending from above to blanket the Temple of the Elements in endless grey and the rumbling boom of rolling thunder. There is no sign of what is happening within except for the frequent flashes of lightning.

At a Crossroads on Greywind Pass
You are at a desolate intersection on the vast southern moors. Much of the
surrounding terrain is made up of various rocks and boulders. A huge mountain
range can be seen in the distance to the east. There is a small path leading
west from the road here, winding deeper into the rocky terrain in that
direction. A wide gravel road serves as the main pass leading northeast into
the mountains, while another rocky, narrow trail winds southeast toward the
southern end of the range.

Wren says, 'Beware.'

Quellious nods her head and says, "Ready."

Tay grunts

Wren says, 'Now we have to fight our way through some nasty territory just to reach the temple.'

Wren says, 'Frost Trolls.'

The party cuts through the frost trolls, and makes their way to the concealed entrance which leads to the Temple of the Elements.

On the Rocky Path in the Eastern Mountains
This narrow rocky trail winds east and west through the cold grey mountain
range. You are surrounded by the steep mountainside just off the path, rising
up like jagged walls of stone. There are fresh blankets of snow on the higher
ridges. There are strange cracks along the rockface here.
Obvious Exits: West Northeast
A Young Climber no longer needs your help.

Eryn searches...
Eryn discovers a way southeast!

Wren says, 'Here!'

Eryn nods.

They venture down a hidden rocky corridor, making first contact with the enemy, an arcanist driven utterly mad. His blubbering is interrupted only by the incantation for evocations of assault, until he too is put down, just as the trolls from before.

Near a Clean Rockface in the Path
There is a remarkably clean portion of rock along the side of the path here,
where the moss seems to stop abruptly before continuing again after a short
amount of space. The bare grey rockface seems to stand out from the surrounding
dark green moss.
Obvious Exits: North Southwest

Wren searches...
Wren discovers a way southeast!

Looking southeast you see...

Atop a Long Stone Staircase
A set of winding stone steps have been carved into the cold grey stone of
the trail as it continues downhill toward the southeast from here. Moss covers
much of the surrounding rockface on either side, while an uncovered portion of
the wall to the northwest stands out.
There is an open wall to the northwest.
Obvious Exits: Southeast Northwest
Hostile Creatures Here: Army of Elementals

Ulias scouts the area, looking for signs of life...

Wren says, 'Well, blast.'

Ulias gasps in astonishment.

Tay raises a quizzical eyebrow.

Wren says, 'Look, carefully!'

Wren says, 'To the southeast. Be quiet about it.'

A distressing sight awaits the heroes once they penetrate the thick stormclouds surrounding the Temple. Instead of a few scattered fanatics and wandering elementalists, an entire army of elementals stands at the ready to defend the stairway to the temple proper. Though they might triumph over even these numbers, an attempt to gain way by brute force would surely alert the fanatics within.

Ulias says in a low tone, "they have gathered a defense.."

Eryn says 'Oh.'

Eryn looks to the southeast.

Wren says, 'I'm going to scout ahead with flying eye.'

Wren says, 'Excuse me for just a moment...'

Wren's mind leaves her body as she becomes a Flying Eye...

Hostile Creatures Here: Army of Elementals

Standing in orderly lines, dozens if not hundreds of fire, frost, and lightning elementals stand at the ready here. Even more impressive than their summoningis the tight control that keeps so many arcane soldiers at attention. Hell will surely be unleashed upon whoever challenges them, but for now this army is being kept on a tight leash.

Only at the doorstep of the temple itself does their vigil cease, giving a narrow opportunity to infiltrate.

At the Foot of a Stone Temple
You are standing on the stone floor of a walkway that exends along the base
of this ancient temple. A small waterfall runs down from the mountains to the
north and into a stream to the west, where an overturned tree trunk serves as a
bridge. The walkway continues to the north and south, while a large stone door
leads east into the temple itself.
There is a locked door to the east.

With that sliver of opportunity spotted, Wren returns to her body, guarded by her companions on the other side of this most precarious approach.

Eryn stays silent, watching vigilantly to the southeast.

Wren shakes her head somberly.

Quellious plants her tower shield firmly on the ground, in front of her.

Wren says, 'Even if we could fight past them, there are too many.'

Ulias says 'rho's teeth... look at them all...'

Wren says, 'We'd make too much noise, too early.'

Beriedir calms his owl.

Tay grins mischievously.

Ulias nods.

Eryn's eyes narrow, considering.

Oiche says 'Is there another way around?'

Wren says, 'Here's the plan: by the door itself, there's a single elemental guardian. They're expecting a fight at the chokepoint, not beyond it!'

Tay says 'i dance with me blades it'

Tay says 'll be fun.'

Wren says, 'I'll render ALL of us invisible.'

Quellious prays, "May Yan's wheel spin in our favor."

Wren says, 'This spell will last about twenty seconds'

Quellious says 'Yan's rim! You university folk have lots of tricks.'

Wren says, 'Is everyone ready? As soon as we're invisible, we'll move southeast then east.'

Beriedir nods.

Ulias says 'I can not see around the bend... is it a straight shot East?'

Eryn nods her head and says, "Ready."

Wren counts down from five, then group casts invisibility. In an instant, the gathered heroes are simply gone, left to their own devices to sneak past the army of elementals. Some fly, some stalk, some surely bumble, but none are seen.

ice!
There is a locked frozen door to the east.
Obvious Exits: North East South West

Someone says 'The grunt is here!'

Wren says, 'Everyone who made it, STAND at the ready'

Ulias fades into view.

Eryn soars from the west on a giant flying vulture.

Ulias nods.

Once past the elementals, the heroes find another obstacle. The primary entrance has been completely covered with a thick but nigh-invisible sheet of ice, reinforced by magic to the durability of steel. This way is closed to them, and their only hope is to try the eastern entrance before it too can be sealed.

Eryn examines the thick ice, feeling closely for weaknesses, but a lightning fanatic happens upon them while she does so! He's eliminated quickly, but not silently.

Ulias says 'that was close... i think we got him before he could raise an alarm...'

Wren says, 'Too close. Here. Everyone help yourself to a scroll of Silence.' She shares another set of scrolls with any willing to take them.

Ulias says 'If I read the silence scroll, will not the shield spell leave my mind?'

Wren says, 'It will. Only those confident in their survival should attempt to use them.'

Wren says, 'Okay, from now on we'll have to move together.'

A Frost Fanatic yells, "Interlopers approach, seal the door quickly!"

Ulias winces

Wren says, 'And quickly!'

Single-file, the group dashes along the temple arcade towards the temple's back door.

Along the Temple Arcade by the Ocean
You are traveling along the outer balcony and walkway as it extends around
the base of the ancient stone temple. The foundation of the old temple was
constructed into the rocky terrain at the very southeastern corner of the
maindland. Waves crash against the rocky base just a few feet down from here.
Between the pillars along the southern edge of the walkway, you can see the
great blue ocean rippling endlessly in the distance.

Wren says, 'There's a back door!' as she leads them, explaining while they run. A stray elementalist, freshly ensnared by the temple's lures, is ensorcelled, stabbed, and summarily kicked into the ocean with hardly a second look. It is a kinder fate than what awaits the lightning fanatic right behind him. And as for the third opponent they face along the way...

Eryn gestures magically towards a Fire Fanatic...
A sphere of magical energy jolts from her hand...
A Fire Fanatic is hit with a surge of magical energies for 32,308 damage!
A Fire Fanatic is hit with a surge of magical energies for 35,563 damage!
A Fire Fanatic is hit with a surge of magical energies for 34,675 damage!
A Fire Fanatic is slain!
He had:
nothing of value.

Not a single shred of his body lasts long enough to pollute the ocean waters below. At last, they arrive at the eastern entrance, which is already halfway sealed by the frost fanatics cooperating to ice over the door.

Along the Temple Arcade by the Ocean
You are standing on the stone floor of a walkway that exends along the base
of this ancient temple. Between the stone columns along the outer edge of the

leads west into the temple itself.

It is the last swift and easy fight the heroes will enjoy this day.

Wren says, 'They know we're coming now,' as the group enters.

At a Door in the Ancient Temple
A massive door made of the same old light grey stone leads east out of the
temple here. The faint sounds of ocean waves can be heard coming from that
direction. Thin patches of light brown dirt and dark breen moss cover much of
the surrounding stone.
There is an open door to the east.

Eryn lets out a deep sigh.

Wren says, 'We have to learn more, and quickly!'

Wren says, 'I need two volunteers.'

Eryn nods.

Wren says, 'I've got charm scrolls'

Eryn says 'I will if no one else would like.'

Wren says, 'We'll charm some fanatics, and interrogate them for more information.'

Eryn nods toward Wren.

Ulias steps forward, "I will go, if you trust me to do the job."

Wren says, 'Good.'

Eryn says 'Go to it Ulias.'

Wren says, 'I'll charm the first fanatic we can find, then Eryn, then Ulias.'

With some difficulty, they track down and begin charming the fanatics wandering the open halls of the temple's first level.

At a Large Pedestal in the Temple
You are in the halls of an ancient stone temple. There are pillars of grey
stone stretching up toward countless archways along the high vaulted ceiling.
There is a large, round pedestal here made of the same grey stone.

Heroes Here: Tay Ulias Eryn
Beriedir Oiche Quellious

Tay spits in the face of one

Eryn frowns at Tay.

Wren gestures, and freezes the saliva before it reaches the passive elementalist's face.

Wren says, to Tay, 'No.'

Quellious says 'Kef's eye! You wildfolk are indeed wild!'

Wren says, to Tay, 'nothing that might interrupt the spell!'

Ulias turns to a mammoth, "go on now good friend, you've done well."

A Woolly Mammoth disappears in a puff of smoke.

Wren says, 'Here, Ulias, a scroll.'

Eryn watches Tay, silently.

Wren says, 'Eryn, take one as well.'

After charming a number of the fanatics patrolling the upper temple, the heroes learn the distressing truth. From their enemies' number have arisen three champions, each of which graced with a Supernal Rune that allows them to control the ritual energies coursing through the temple.

The first champion awaits them on the first level. He is an imperious elven apostate, outcast from the University itself, who commands the merciless magic of cold.

The second is patrolling the second level. She's a half-orc, young but unquestionably talented with the purifying fires of a sacred order she left in ashes with her violent departure.

The third and final champion is attending to the ritual circle at the base of the temple, and their previous identity is lost to time. Now, they are Hyperian Swan, a living storm, having cast off their fleshly body for an incarnation of pure arcane power.

Wren says, 'The two of you might want to switch back to Prismatic Shield...'

Ulias reads his Scroll of Prismatic Shield.

Wren suppresses a shiver. 'Like a lich, but steeped in evocation instead of necromancy?'

Tay tip toes around the corner to peek.

Wren says, 'Well, nothing for it. We need to defeat these three champions.'

Oiche says 'Fascinating'

Quellious says 'I will rush them with my shield and force them to focus their assault on me. I will hold on as long as I can'

Wren nods at Quellious.

Oiche says 'I wonder if there is another way to learn this'

Tay says 'same here.'

Eryn pats Quellious on the back.

Beriedir cheers loudly at Quellious!

Eryn says 'Brave'

Wren says, 'I'll do what I can to disrupt them and heal you.'

Wren says, 'Now that we know what they look like, let's find them and take them down.'

The adventurers summon reinforcements, Storgal the dwarf, who knows these halls well, and fight their way to the first of the elemental champions. He awaits them inside the western entrance, which he has sealed with a wall of magical ice.

Wren looks to his location and points. 'There!'

Wren says, 'Well, this definitely counts as a desperate fight.'

Wren says, 'Everyone, prepare your prismatic shields and drink your potions!'

Vicolani the Patient is tall even for an elf. He's as pale as his flowing white robes, his bald head adorned with a crown of ice that glitters in the dim, flickering light. At first glance, it is inset with dozens of rubies, but each is in fact the frozen viscera of a fanatic foolish enough to challenge his rule.

The adventurers ready themselves, then charge Vicolani, who greets them with a blinding gale of frost and sleet. They are snowblind, scattered, lost, and driven back. Those that live summon the souls of those that are frozen to death, and they regroup.

Ulias gaps in a deep breath.

Quellious says 'That... was'

Oiche coughs

Eryn looks overwhelmed.

Beriedir sits.

Quellious says 'By Rho's scales they're mighty!'

Oiche says 'What was that?'

Wren responds only by casting spells of healing and protection, until she finally says, 'As soon as you're hit with a spell, refresh your prismatic shield if you can. If you can't, RETREAT! I'll hold him.'

Wren says, 'I'm going to introduce myself first. Follow when you're ready.'

Eryn says 'Introduce?'

Wren says, 'Yes. Dragon first.'

She leads the charge, her Spectral Dragon's breath of sheer force parting the oncoming gale of wind and frost just a sliver, enough for the heroes to advance single file. They engage Vicolani the Patient hand to hand, but again are driven back by spells and unrelenting as an avalanche.

Ulias looks at Tay and says, "There's a beast in every man, and it stirs when you put a sword in his
hand."

Beriedir says 'I wield no sword. The word is my weapon!'

Quellious rushes into the fray with her shield up!

When he is at last laid low, seemingly shattered into a torrent of snowflakes by Wren's Illusory Force, Vicolani the Patient leaves behind nothing but the Supernal Rune of Frost.

In the Ancient Stone Temple
You are in the halls of an ancient stone temple. There are pillars of grey
stone stretching up toward the countless archways along the ceiling high above.
Much of the surrounding stone is cracked and dirty, with green moss and vines
sprawling across some of the temple surfaces.

Items Here: Supernal Rune of Frost

Quellious wipes her brow and says, "Phew..."

Ulias drops to the floor and starts panting.

Beriedir cheers loudly!

Wren says, 'There, it's done.'

Eryn looks at the Supernal before visually appraising each member of the group for wounds.

Quellious prays, "May the Might of Rho be with us."

Quellious prays, "May Yan's wheel spin in our favor."

Quellious chants, "KEF! KEF! KEF!"

Wren says, 'Take a moment, everyone.'

Eryn says 'Well done all.'

Wren says, 'Fights against spellcasters are usually brief, very violent affairs.'

Wren says, 'Either they take you down immediately, or you do them.'

Wren says, 'This is... distressing. No wonder they chose him to seal the door.'

Eryn says to Wren, 'I've seen nothing like that rune before.'

Wren takes the Supernal Rune and places it in her pack.

Eryn nods toward Wren.

Wren says, 'Hopefully this is the only time we'll ever see the like. This is one of a set of three.'

Wren says, 'With all of them, we can drain the power from their ritual before it completes.'

Quellious says 'As this is my first time in this temple, it seems I won't be venturing here my lonesome anytime soon'

Eryn looks wearily around us.

Eryn says to Wren, 'The power is phenomenal.'

Eryn says to Wren, 'You did well calling us here, I hope we're not too late!'

Wren says, to Eryn, 'Even knowing it damns those who wield it, the temptation must be immense.'

Oiche says 'Next is fire?'

Wren says, 'Next is fire.'

Eryn nods toward Wren.

Eryn says 'Quite so.'

Storgal shoots a massive flame from his mouth!

Storgal says 'sorry'

Beriedir moves away from Storgal.

Eryn looks impressed at Storgal.

Eryn chortles.

Storgal says 'he talks about fire'

Eryn nods toward Storgal.

Tay takes out a water cantin and gets ready to sprinkel holy water upon the idiot.

Eryn frowns toward Tay.

Wren lets out a deep sigh, but leads them onward, through the first floor of the temple and towards the stairs downward.

Tay shrugs

Quellious says 'Glad to see a fellow soldier here'

Quellious cheers loudly at Storgal!

At a Staircase in the Stone Temple

stairwell itself is otherwise empty.

They descend, and make their way to the relatively narrow corridors of the temple's second story. These chokepoints are ripe for ambush, as they'll soon learn.

In a Long, Dark Corridor
The narrow walls of the corridor are made of light grey stone which is
smooth on the surface but cracked and dirty in several places. The arched
ceiling of the same stone is not very far above. Old torch sconces have been
left empty every few feet along the walls.

Quellious says 'Tis a shame to go after a fellow halver'

Beriedir clutches his quarterstaff tightly.

Wren says, 'If mercy is on your mind, wait until after she's subdued.'

Quellious says 'But she's choosing to destroy the world of the Three'

Quellious shakes her head.

Wren says, 'But I won't argue if you stay your hand.'

Quellious says 'Nay'

Quellious says 'She chose her fate'

Wren says, 'We move!'

stone walls appear somewhat closer together. There is less light in that
direction, while the main corridor continues west along the southern wall of
light grey stone.

Eryn gestures magically towards Sanna the Pure...
A sphere of magical energy jolts from her hand...
Sanna the Pure is hit with a surge of magical energies for 35,169 damage!
Sanna the Pure is slain!
She had:
Supernal Rune of Fire
You gain 6,300 experience.

Eryn cheers loudly!

Beriedir chuckles merrily.

Eryn looks very very proud of herself.

Tay says 'poof. . .'

Oiche says 'Wait - that was not real'

Tay grins

Wren says, '... that can't have been'

Sanna the Pure walks in.
Sanna the Pure chants strange words of magic...

... and unleashes a wave of fire that roars into the hallway corner, baking the adventurers like clay.

The young half-orc is barely five feet tall, and her lustrous red hair falls nearly to the floor behind her. She's young and athletic, with a sturdy broad-shouldered build, and so dark skinned she might have vanished into the dark corridors of the temple if she had a mind. Instead, she dresses in bright yellow and saffron, demanding the attention of any who glance her way.

Oiche says 'An illusion, ready yourself'

Wren says, 'BEHIND US!'

Eryn says 'An apparition.'

The conflict is long and hard fought, but a flash in the pan compared to Vicolani the Patient. Sanna burns much faster in comparison, and is ultimately laid low by another Illusory Force. The Supernal Rune of Fire spills free of her grasp and rolls away from her battered body.

Eryn breathes deeply, her hands on her knees.

Wren lets out a deep sigh and says, 'I enjoy this business less and less.'

Eryn says 'It had me fooled then!'

Tay bounces on his tip toes back and forth ready for more.

Oiche says 'One more though'

Eryn looks about us, warily.

Eryn says 'Does anyone need more potions?'

Wren says, 'Yes, now's a good time to restock'

The gathered heroes resupply, then move onward, towards the stairwell down to the third and final floor of the temple.

Wren says, 'their last champion is apparently some living... cloud... lightning person? It seems they've transformed themselves into a half-elemental existence.'

Eryn says 'Half... elemental.'

Eryn says 'It sounds almost peaceful if it weren't so corrupting.'

Eryn says 'Everyone got what they need?'

Oiche says 'I suppose it depends waht the other half it'

Ulias nods.

Eryn says 'Get more if you can use it'

Tay nods toward Eryn.

Wren says, 'These potions don't last long, Storgal. So feel free to take a few.'

Storgal says 'i didn't know, and i think there was alcool'

Storgal gives a warm smile.

Wren smiles with her eyes, but it doesn't quite reach her mouth.

Wren says, 'Let's move on.'

Eryn moves to Wren's shoulder

Eryn says 'yes'

In a Long Corridor of Stone
You are in a long corridor beneath the ancient stone temple. The walls on

several places. The arched ceiling is just above you and not as high as that of
the main temple chamber above.

Eryn forages...
Green Emerald

Wren lets out a deep sigh.

Eryn picks up a Green Emerald and puts it in her backpack.

Wren says, 'Still, they tear into each other.'

Wren says, 'Even on the eve of an apotheosis.'

Wren says, 'Or an attempted one, anyway.'

Eryn says 'There's still hope.'

In the Corner of a Great Hall
You are at the far southwest corner of a great chamber of corridors beneath
the temple. The flat stone ceiling is low but high enough to move about
comfortably. There are stone half walls along either side of the narrow
corridors, allowing you to see to the other identical paths across the chamber.
A small stone staircase leads above here.
Obvious Exits: North East Up

Wren says, 'This is the lowest level I've ever found.'

Wren says, 'The ritual circle they use to summon elementals is down here.'

Wren says, 'Be cautious.'

The group circles the outer perimeter carefully, checking for traps or snares, but they don't find anything but an open invitation to approach the summoning circle at the center of the floor.

At a Corridor to the Center
You are at the halfway point of the western wall of the chamber, where
another narrow corridor leads east into the center. The same grey stone half
wall can be seen on either side of the corridor.

Wren says, 'The perimeter seems normal.'

Wren says, 'We move in, then.'

Down a Narrow Corridor
You are traveling down one of the many narrow corridors in this great hall
in the underground below the temple. Several other corridors stretch across the
chamber, crossing with one another at the center. A half wall extends along the
sides of the corridors. All around you is the same cracked and dirty grey
stone.

Hostile Creatures Here: Hyperian Swan, the Power

Wren says, 'There they are.'

Ulias says 'there it is..'

Tay peeks around the corner

Oiche says 'Recast Haste before moving in?'

Wren says, 'Recast your prismatic shields and prepare your potions'

And as soon as they muster their defenses, the heroes charge.

Hyperian Swan, the Power
It's impossible to know whether this was a man or a woman, a human or a gnome, for all that is left of Hyperian Swan is their magical essence distilled into the cloudlike figure of a living storm. The Supernal Rune of Lightning is worn atop their ethereal body like a crown, and half a dozen magical staffs crackle with power as they rotate lazily around them.

This fight is not like the last two. Lightning crackles between Hyperian Swan's five staves, stunning and threatening to outright electrocute anyone brave enough to approach. The entire ritual chamber becomes a stormcloud, and it is all that Wren can do to keep the heroes alive and on their feet. Eryn's bolts of arcane power splash against indomitable shields, and what are swords and fists, but passing irritants, to a living wind? The heroes, instead, endeavor to disarm him. One floating staff after another his hacked to pieces and scattered into the tempest, until Hyperian Swan's defenses are lowered. Arcane missiles disrupt his physical form, and Wren finally annihilates the will containing them with a vicious Enchantment.

There's a crack, and one last gust as the magical wind is surrendered back to the laws of the natural world. The air stills, revealing a blasted corridor and an unscratched ritual circle. All that is left of Hyperian Swan are stray fragments of their oak and steel staves.

Tay cheers.

Wren says, 'They're... gone, I think.'

Wren says, 'Now for the dangerous bit.'

You pick up a Supernal Rune of Lightning and put it in your backpack.

Oiche says 'What is the dangerous bit?'

Eryn reads her Scroll of Silence.

Wren says, 'We're going to have to use these runes to channel the power stored here back into the Overworld as a whole.'

Quellious says 'Sounds simple enough.'

Beriedir agrees with you.

Wren says, 'Indoubtedly, the Temple will resist. This is the best point of intervention, by far...'

Wren says, '... but it's also where the Fanatics summon elementals.'

Eryn says 'For the balance's sake, but I don't like it.'

Wren says, 'The same elementals that have proven so deadly thus far.'

Wren hastens the party and appears to multiply herself with defensive illusions, then says, 'Renew your shields. Prepare for the worst.'

As they do so, Oiche says 'What is the plan?'

Quellious peers at Oiche.

Quellious says 'Have you considered the mighty legions of Rhojidan?'

Wren sinks down into her flying carpet and meditates, the three runes floating out of her bag and beginning to hover in front of her. The Supernal Rune of Frost shines where it hovers over her head, the other two glowing softly on either side.

Wren says, 'I'm going to draw out the essence of Cold first...'

Channeling the Supernal Rune of Frost, the heroes drain the essence of sheer cold from the ritual circle and back into the world... but the bitterness and regret of endless winter is not so easily forgotten, and it incarnates into a number of furious elementals!

Eryn silences the first of the six, and the other five splash against the walls of ice she and Oiche summon. As if a ghost, Wren's spectral dragon flies right through it and snaps one of the elementals in its jaws, tackling a second to the ground, and the battle is joined in earnest.

The defenses are not enough. Tay, Beriedir, and Oiche fall, frozen before they even hit the ground, but are swiftly avenged.

Heroes Here: Beriedir (Dead) Ulias Eryn
Tay (Dead) Storgal Oiche (Dead)
Quellious

Eryn looks at the fallen.

Wren says, 'Yan's mercy!'

Ulias scouts the area, looking for signs of life...

... and Wren begins the rituals to resurrect the fallen.

Quellious says 'I'm glad that Yan's warmth fills the dead'

Quellious says 'And renews them'

Eryn says 'The wheel spins with light.'

A frost fanatic makes an attempt to ambush them while they're distracted, but is swiftly put down. The heroes renew their defenses, and prepare to drain the essence of Fire.

Oiche says 'well, that was bracing'

Eryn says 'Which next?'

Wren says, 'Fire.'

Wren says, 'Next is fire.'

Wren says, 'I have no reason to believe the next two will be any easier...'

Wren says, '... prepare yourselves with prismatic shield.'

Wren says, 'Drink potions on my mark.'

Wren says, 'Five'

Wren says, 'Four'

Wren says, 'Three'

Wren says, 'two'

Wren says, 'One'

Wren says, 'Mark!'

The heroes drink their prismatic potions simultaneously, and Wren begins the ritual.

Channeling the Supernal Rune of Fire, the heroes drain the essence of purifying flame from the ritual circle and back into the world... but the rage against impurity finds their own presence offensive, poisonous to the ambition which gathered it, and incarnates into a number of furious elementals!

This time, the heroes are better prepared. The fire elementals are put to sleep the moment they emerge from the circle, and slain before they can wake. Of course, nothing is ever that simple, and they immediately explode when killed, into tiny armies of vengeful flames too numerous to count. Tay falls in the confusion, and is swiftly resurrected.

Oiche pats themselves down

Eryn dusts herself off.

Wren says, 'They're getting even angrier as we progress.'

Oiche says 'so storm this time?'

Wren says, 'Be wary! If your shield falters, lightning spells often stun those who survive them.'

Wren says, 'I'll do what I can to help if it happens, but let's prepare for the worst.'

Wren says, 'I've prepared a sanctuary to the south.'

Wren says, 'In the worst case, regroup there.'

Tay shimmys in glee

Wren says, 'prismatic shields up!'

Wren says, 'Ready your potions!'

Wren says, 'Drink on my mark!'

Wren says, 'Five!'

Wren says, 'Four'

Wren says, 'Three'

Wren says, 'Two'

Wren says, 'One'

Wren says, 'Mark!'

The heroes are wreathed with protective magics as Wren focuses on the final rune!

Channeling the Supernal Rune of Lightning, the heroes drain the essence of endless storms from the ritual circle and back into the world... and all is quiet.

Wren says, '... what?'

Quellious takes a moment to ponder the situation.

Wren says, 'Did that... just work?'

Eryn blinks.

Beriedir peers off into the distance.

Oiche says 'No way'

Wren laughs in relief. 'Finally, something went right!'

Then there is a BOOM which echoes with such force that the heroes feel it in their bones! The temple is truck with lightning! Then struck again, and again! Lightning elementals emerge from the ritual circle, not to attack, but to flee that which pursues them. A massive draconic jaw snaps up one too slow to make good its escape, and roars in time with another lightning strike.

Eryn says 'Hmmm....'

Tay snorts

Wren says, '... or not...'

Eryn gasps in astonishment.

Quellious says 'By the three!'

Wren says, 'READY YOURSELVES!'

It struggles to emerge from such a paltry circle, this newly empowered Prismatic Dragon, but it tears itself into the Overworld with a shriek of pain. It threatens to crush the heroes underfoot as it marches for the exit Temple, to deliver its wrath upon the world!

Ulias gapes

Eryn says 'THE DRAGON!'

Prismatic Dragon soars in.

Combat is joined, and quickly turns against the heroes. Spells of flame, frost, and lightning are less than nothing against this beast, which drinks in elemental energies as a fish does water. Every time an arcane missile or sword strike manages to slice a fragment off its thick hide, the scales erupt into tiny armies of vengeful elementals. Its every breath is a storm of bone-shattering frost, its claws and teeth as murderous and large as any man.

Quellious says 'The Three guide us and protect us!'

Ulias headbutts Prismatic Dragon for light damage.

The fight is agonizingly slow, but every conflict leading up to this one has tempered the heroes and their defenses. For all that the Prismatic Dragon threatens them with every threat they've seen before: fire, frost, and storm, it does not challenge them with anything new.

Eventually, after an hour of struggle, the monstrosity exhausts itself. With one last spell, Wren's illusory force shatters its skull and unravels the spells within.

The dragon explodes with elemental energy!

Of course, that isn't the end of it. It is nothing less than a dozen elementals bound together in a faltering attempt at creating a god. Those that survive the explosion attack the heroes, only to be immediately set upon in turn. At this point, nobody's surprised.

Wren's Spectral Dragon breathes a powerful wave of force...

Finally, the last few remnants of the ritual energies are dispersed. The runes, cores, and dust which remain of what was once dozen of elementals and a nascent psuedo-divinity are scattered throughout a ruined chamber, every stone surface seared pitch black.

Eryn inspects the corpse of the dragon.

Quellious wipes her brow and says, "Phew..."

Oiche says 'Puny God'

Quellious rests her flail over her shoulder. 'By the Three, we did it!'

Wren collapses to her knees.

Quellious cheers loudly!

Eryn looks exhausted.

Beriedir lets out a deep sigh.

Ulias drops to the floor and starts panting.

With the defeat of the Prismatic Dragon, the last remaining ritual energies are drained from the Temple of Elements. The stormclouds surrounding it are scattered with a sudden gust of western wind, and the cacophany of combat and endless lightning strikes cease. All is silent, save for the distant footsteps of fleeing survivors, and the relieved sighs of the triumphant heroes.

Storgal says 'there is lot of dust of my armor.... i must work'

Eryn nods toward Storgal.

Eryn looks around her. "Do you think it worked?"

Wren says, 'Thank you for your help, everyone!'

Tay picks up a Lightning Rune and puts it in his backpack.

Wren says, 'I can feel it. The air is still flush with power... but it's dissipating, slowly, rather than building.'

Oiche says 'Wren, I love you dearly, but I've decided that your potions need a better flavour'

Wren laughs, and Eryn gives her a warm smile.

Quellious says 'They kept you alive... mostly didn't they?'

Oiche says 'Oh yes. Very useful'

Wren says, 'Perhaps a touch of strawberry, in the next batch.'

Storgal says 'i'm ready for a new fight ! where are ennemies ?'

Eryn says to Storgal, 'Quite enough for one day.'

Storgal says 'i'm hot !'

Ulias shrugs his shoulders with indifference.

Storgal shoots a massive flame from his mouth!
Storgal is drunk.

Quellious pats Storgal on the back.

Ulias scouts the area, looking for signs of life...

Eryn quickly steps to one side to avoid Storgal's dragon breath.

Ulias says 'I see only scattered fanatics'

Quellious says 'Well done, despite your lack of sobriety!'

Tay nods.

Eryn gives Ulias a warm smile.

Wren says, 'Excellent news, Ulias.'

Storgal unpacks his Flagon of Honey Mead.
Storgal drinks his Flagon of Honey Mead.
Storgal is plastered.

Wren says, 'It'll take them some time to recover.'

Storgal gives a warm smile.

Eryn says to Storgal, 'I think you might like a potent drink we have in the Enclave bar... '

Storgal says 'you have allready say that, i'm waiting'

Eryn says 'Duly noted.'

Wren says, 'God, look at all the gems and runes and...'

Eryn gives a disappointed, "Oh..."

Wren casts Dispel one more time, removing what appears to be a false wall.

Ulias gasps in astonishment.

Eryn says, "HUH?"

Ulias says 'what is that....'

Tay says 'huh'

Storgal says 'i nether understand wizards'

Beriedir peers off into the distance.

Wren says, 'You can't... oh? Oh! The chests are invisible. There's a supply cache here.'

Eryn says 'Ah!'

Eryn gives a warm smile.

Wren says, 'Well, that's a nice bonus.'

Wren, looking exhausted, hands still bloody, glances around one last time.

Wren says, 'Let's get the heck out of here, yes?'

Beriedir leans over and tries to comfort Wren.

Tay pats wren on the shoulder

Quellious says 'Well this was a fun romp, if any of you ever need a faithful servant of the Three, feel free to call upon me!'

Tay nods toward Wren.

Quellious points a finger at Eryn.

Tay says 'good job'

Eryn says 'We can rest easier, the balance remains for now.'

You thank Tay sincerely.

Storgal says 'i stay back, i continue to kill fanatics'

Eryn raises a quizzical eyebrow at Quellious.

Quellious says 'She can send us off to faraway lands can't she?'

Eryn says 'Hmmm?'

Oiche says to Wren, 'where to?'

Eryn chants strange words and gestures magically with her hand...
Eryn conjures a portal to a distant location.

Wren says, to Oiche, 'Ah, well, I think Eryn has it covered.'

The party retreats through the portal.

The large cobblestone square is lined with several wooden benches where
villagers stop to rest, talk and trade. Travelers of all kinds pass through the

endless, waving fields of tall green grass.

That's a problem easily solved, and Wren orders entire barrels of ale from Hessa's Sungrass Inn.

Eryn grins mischievously at Wren.

That's not where the story ends, of course, but that's where we'll choose to end it.
